Louisiana-Lafayette
48, NC A&T 7
LAFAYETTE, La., September 23, 2006 -- It was a different
game, but the same problem that has hampered the North
Carolina A&T football team through the first three
games occurred again. Louisiana-Lafayette, a Division
I-A team out of the Sun Belt Conference, rushed for 330
yards in a 48-7 victory over the Aggies.
The Aggies fall to 0-3 season, while the Ragin' Cajuns
improved to 1-2. Curtis Walls led the Aggies with a career
night. He had career highs in catches and yards as he
finished the night with eight receptions for 115 yards.
The game was delayed 45 minutes at the outset due to
lightning that passed over the stadium. With the game
underway, the Cajuns ceased the momentum when Jason Chery
blocked Aggies punter Lee Woodson's punt. Johnny Felders
recovered the loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown.
The Cajuns' missed the extra point and led 6-0.
Louisiana-Lafayette turned from its special teams to
its running game. Tyrell Fenroy had runs of 8, 9, 14
and 8 on the Cajuns' first drive. On his second run of
eight yards, he helped the Cajuns move the ball to the
Aggies 10-yard line. Lightning flashed again, delaying
the game for 26 minutes.
When the teams returned, the Aggies defense stiffened.
They forced a 4th-and-goal from the Aggies 4. The Cajuns
decided to go for it, and Cajuns quarterback Jerry Babb
found Corey Frederick in the middle of the end zone for
a touchdown and a 13-0 lead. A Fenroy 23-yard run on
the Cajuns ensuing drive set up a 4-yard touchdown run
from Babb.
The Aggies did mount a drive to combat the Cajuns running
attack. Aided by a 15-yard personal foul penalty, the
Aggies moved the ball to the Cajuns 45. Tony Leath moved
the Aggies even closer to a potential score with a 13-yard
run. After Tre' Green tackled Herb Miller for a five-yard
loss, Miller connected with Walls for an 18-yard gain
to the Cajuns 18.
Miller would later sprint out to the right for an 11-yard
gain and a first-and-goal for the Aggies. But a reverse
for no gain, an incomplete pass and an 11-yard sack,
forced the Aggies to attempt a 33-yard field goal that
Ross Vosburg missed wide left. Louisiana-Lafayette responded
with a 12-play, 80-yard drive culminated by an 8-yard
touchdown run by Chester Johnson to give the Cajuns a
comfortable lead.
The Aggies return to conference play next week when
they face Norfolk State in Norfolk , Va., at 4 p.m. The
Aggies return home after five weeks away when they play
Morgan State at Aggie Stadium on Oct. 7 at 1:30 p.m.
