Shaw 26, Edward
Waters 20
September 16, 2006
Jacksonville, FL - Shaw got their first
win of the season at the 8th Annual Willie E. Gary Classic
as they defeated the Tigers of Edward Waters College
(0-4; 0-0) 26-20. The Bears did not only get their first
win of the season but they also kept a winning streak
alive at the annual Willie E. Gary Classic as they made
it four in a row.
This was a vital contest as both teams were looking for
that first win but there could only be one. Shaw University
(1-2; 0-0 CIAA) proved to be the better team with the
victory. Not only was this a huge win for Shaw as a team
but it was also a big win for Head Coach Darrell Asberry
as he got his first win as a collegiate head coach.
This was possible with the tag team efforts on the offensive
side of with Jermonty Kimbrough (5'11, Senior, 186, QB/Mobile,
AL) who finished the game with 210 yards passing and
31 yards rushing with 3 touchdowns and Reginald Price
(6'0, Junior, 190, RB/Winston-Salem, NC) who finished
the night with a season high 151 yards rushing and a
touchdown.
The Bears end the night with 439 yards of total offence
229 of which were rushing yards and 210 passing. The
Bears defense held Edward Waters to only 104 yards of
total offense four of which were rushing. The highlight
for the Tigers was a 100 yard interception return by
Antwan Nicolas. Highlights for the Bears were James Pettway
(6'3, Freshman, WR/Prichardm, AL) who had a 66 yard touchdown
reception, Chad Green (6'5, Sophomore, DE/Nashville,
NC) who led the defense with 7 tackles, 3 sacks, and
2 force fumbles, and Damon Harrison (6'3, Senior, WR/Newark,
NJ) who scored on a 14 yard pass that got things moving
in the Bears 26-20 victory over Edward Waters.
The Bears of Shaw University (1-2; 0-0 CIAA) will be
back in action on Saturday, September 23 as they travel
to Orono, ME to take on the University of Maine-Orono
game time is 2:00 pm.
