September 9, 2006

Dover, DE --- The first night game at Alumni Stadium produced some of the biggest offensive numbers in recent Delaware State football history. The Hornets scored early and often in a 63-28 win over St. Francis (Pa.) Saturday night.

DSU improved to 2-0 for the second straight year, while St. Francis fell to 1-1. Delaware State unveiled some heavy offensive artillery in the "Military Day" contest, racking up 562 total yards-its most since 1986.

Quarterback Vashon Winton completed 12-of-13 passes for 222 yards and four touchdowns, each to Shaheer McBride. The Hornets also rushed for 325 yards.

Two players topped the 100-yard rushing mark for the first time since since 1997. Delaware State scored on its first play from scrimmage when Emmanuel Marc ran 73 yards for a touchdown to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead just 43 seconds into the game. Marc scored the game's second touchdown on a 30-yard run less than four minutes later to give the Hornets a 14-0 lead. Marc rushed for a game high 126 yards on just five carries. He has 255 yards in two games this season. Winton and McBride hooked up on the first of their four touchdown passes with 5:39 left in the first quarter to give the Hornets a 21-0 lead.

After St. Francis scored a touchdown with 3:21 left in the opening quarter to make it a 21-7 game, Delaware State scored 35 unanswered points to blow the game open. The Hornets led 49-7 at intermission. Winton and McBride connected on scoring passes of 46 and 48 yards in the second quarter, and hooked up on a 13-yard score in the third quarter.

McBride had career highs of nine catches for 206 yards. The four TD catches also marked a career high. McBride has moved into fourth place on the Hornets' career list with 109 receptions. He also ranks fourth in team history with 1,826 receiving yards. Lennox Norville game off the bench to rush for 106 yards, including a seven-yard score in the fourth quarter. Adam Shrewsbury scored his first career touchdown on a 15-yard run in the second quarter.

The Hornets also scored when Akeem Green blocked a punt that was returned 37 yards for a touchdown by Josh Pope with 11:25 left in the second quarter.

The Hornets scored their most points since a 64-37 win over Howard in 2000. It was also their biggest win since a 66-19 victory over Division II Lock Haven in 1996. The 35-point victory was also Delaware State's biggest against a Division I-AA opponent since a 39-0 shutout of South Carolina State in 1990.

The Hornets have now won six straight home games, dating back to last season.
