Salisbury, NC – In a battle for the seventh annual
Mayor’s Cup, on the campus of Livingstone College,
the Indians of Catawba College (2-0 overall) defeated
the Blue Bears 35-6. Alumni Memorial Stadium buzzed with
4,287 fans and a rivalry that has watched Catawba dominate
the past seven years. Last season, the Blue Bears were
defeated 38-6 on Catawba’s campus.
Livingstone’s (0-3 overall) only touchdown came
from Strong Safety Valentine Bon in the fourth quarter.
Bon recovered an unforced fumble by quarterback Ben Snyder
at the Livingstone 49-yard line and raced into the end-zone
for a 51-yard score at 5:47 remaining in the game. The
following extra point kick failed.
Catawba drew first score at 11:37 in the first quarter
with a 37-yard pas from Brad Roach to Brent Johnson.
Robert Robinson stepped into the end-zone for another
score when he pranced for 15 yards to end a three-play
58-yard drive. Johnson pulled in another one of Roach’s
throws for a six-yard score. The pass ended a five-play
drive for 43 yards. Jamelle Cuthbertson scored the last
offensive touchdown with a three-yard run with 1:44 remaining
in the first half. Prior to the clock running out in
the first half, linebacker Darryl Locklear blocked a
Livingstone punt attempt and returned it 29 yards for
a defensive score. DJ Gill nailed all of is extra point
kicks to give Catawba a stead 35-0 lead at intermission
Next weekend, Livingstone will travel to Richmond, VA
to take on the Panthers of Virginia Union University.
