Tennessee State 29, Samford 7

October 28, 2006

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Tennessee State University remained undefeated in Ohio Valley Conference play with a 29-7 homecoming victory over Samford in front of 18,758 Saturday night at LP Field. The Tigers (5-3, 4-0) stayed pace with Tennessee-Martin as the only undefeated teams in the OVC.

Sophomore quarterback Antonio Heffner scored two second quarter touchdowns to give the Tigers a 13-0 halftime lead. The Memphis, Tennessee native added his third touchdown with 7:09 remaining in the third quarter to increase TSU’s lead to 20-0.

The defense added to the scoring, forcing the Bulldogs quarterback into an intentional grounding in the end zone. The safety gave the Tigers a commanding 22-0 lead heading into the final quarter.

Samford (3-6, 1-5) would score with 6:25 remaining in the game to thwart TSU’s effort to register their first shutout since 2001. The seven points is the lowest point total by an opponent since the first game of the 2004 season when the Tigers defeated Alabama A&M 42-7.

Reserve quarterback Julian Sample entered in the fourth quarter, after Heffner left with a bruised shoulder, and led the Big Blue to their final score of the evening. Sample broke numerous tackles on his way to a 5-yard touchdown run.

Sophomore running back Javarris Williams notched his sixth 100-yard performance of the year carrying 35 times for 162 yards. Tonight’s effort puts Williams at 1,045 rushing yards on the season.

The Tigers travel to Charleston, Illinois as they take on Eastern Illinois on Saturday, November 4. Kick-off for the Ohio valley Conference game is set for 1:30 p.m
