Mississippi Valley State 14, Prairie View A&M 10

Itta Bena, Miss. --- The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils’ defense, second ranked in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, held true to form as they held the Panthers of Prairie View A&M to 183 yards total offense in the Delta Devils 14-10 homecoming victory.

Following a scoreless first quarter the Panthers jumped on the scoreboard first, courtesy of a 20 yard field goal by Eric Hernandez with 8:25 remaining in the second quarter. However, on the ensuing drive Valley responded with a nine-yard touchdown run by freshman tailback Christopher Watkins to cap off a 10 play, 80 yard drive to give Valley a 6-3 lead with 4:07 remaining in the half.

The Delta Devils Defense would again step when linebacker Tyler Knight forced a fumble from Panthers receiver Anthony Beck which defensive back Orthel Edwards returned 48 yards to the Panthers goal line. One play later Valley would again reach pay dirt on a one yard plunge by quarterback Aries Nelson (Walter Burnette conversion good) and the Delta Devils would take a 14-3 lead into the break.

In the third quarter Prairie View would finally put a drive together as they marched down the field 58 yards in 12 plays and scored on a 5 yard run by quarterback Chris Gibson for the games final score at the 7:36 mark.

Offensively for the Delta Devils Watkins finished with 55 yards on 12 carriers while, sophomore tailback Johey Hargrett finished with identical numbers. Receiver Robert Fox led all receivers with two receptions for 33 yards.

For the Panthers Kerry Wilson led the ground attack with 57 yards on 14 carriers. Gibson finished 9-of-20 for 82 yards while rushing for another 26.

Defensively Knight led all tacklers with 11 tackles including two for a loss of yards and a forced fumble. For the Panthers Zach East recorded 10 tackles including one for a loss of yards and an interception returned for 22 yards.
