Johnson C. Smith 19, Edward Waters 14

August 26, 2006

GREENVILLE, SC - The Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University (1-0, 0-0 CIAA) broke their 24-game losing streak this evening as they defeated the Tigers of Edward Waters College (0-1) 19-14 as part of the annual HBCU Classic.

The Golden Bulls under the direction of second year head coach Daryl C. McNeill, were first to hit the scoreboard on a two-yard run by starting tailback Kevin Allen with 9:18 left on the clock in the first quarter. The first half appeared to be all JCSU until Kamali Leitner found a wide open Victor Owens for the Tigers' first touchdown of the game with 2:27 remaining in the second quarter. Despite being shutout the entire second half, the Gold and Blue used a few Tiger miscues and played outstanding defense to secure the victory.

Coach McNeill, who also serves as the offensive coordinator, split the quarterback duties between sophomore Carlton Richardson and senior Donja' Goodson. Though Richardson saw more snaps under center, both guys were able to record a touchdown; Richardson a 67-yard quarterback keeper and Goodson, a 56-yard bullet to senior wide receiver Marquis Belton. Belton had 6 catches for 159 yards and a score.

“I am so proud of our guys this evening”, said an emotional head coach Daryl C. Mcneill. “This is a great moment for us and for the university. We still have more work to do but I look forward to more victories.”

Defensively, Frederick Williams led all defenders with 15 tackles (4 solo, 15 assisted) three for a loss of 13 yards. He had help from junior lineman Elijah Ashley who had five tackles but more importantly 2 for a loss of 28 yards and two sacks for a loss of 23 yards. Senior linebacker Omar Bizzell, who also spent time on kicking duties, registered 9 tackles on the day.

Next up for JCSU will be the Pioneers of Glenville State College. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 pm in Glenville, WV. The series meeting between the two schools is 2-1-0 in favor of the Pioneers.
