SWAC Fall Championships
on the Horizon
October 14, 2005
The Southwestern Athletic Conference will hold four championships/tournaments
during the fall of 2005. With the four sports on tap, conference
schools are on the trail of capturing early season bragging
rights and the right to call themselves “conference champion”.
The sports of cross-country, women’s soccer, women’s
volleyball, and football will have a champion crowned by the
time the Christmas holidays come around.
CROSS-COUNTRY
The SWAC Cross-Country Championships will be held Monday, October
31, 2005 at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View,
Texas. All ten women and men cross-country teams will be
in action as they race toward a SWAC title. Last season,
Grambling State pulled off the championship sweep capturing
both the men and women’s titles. For the 2005 competition,
the women’s race will begin at 9:00 am with the men
starting their race at 10:00 am.
SOCCER
The SWAC Soccer Tournament will take place November 3-6 at
Robinson Stadium on the campus of Grambling State University,
Grambling, Louisiana. The top three seeds from the Eastern
and Western Divisions will gather to decide who will reign
as the SWAC soccer champion and receive the first automatic
qualifier to the 2005 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship.
In 2004, Grambling State faced Alabama A&M in an exciting
final with the Lady Tigers winning 3-0 to claim the title.
This season’s tournament will begin with first-round
play on November 3 at 12 noon. The championship match will
be played November 6 at 10 am and will be shown on ESPNU.
VOLLEYBALL
The 2005 SWAC Volleyball Tournament will happen November 11-12
on the campus of Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas.
Eight teams (the top four teams from the Eastern and Western
Division) will look to unseat five-time defending champion
Alabama A&M. Quarterfinal play in the double-elimination
tournament will begin November 11 at 9 am with the championship
match slated for November 12 at 1:30 pm with a nationally-televised
audience on ESPNU.
FOOTBALL
The 7th SWAC Championship Game will take place December 10
at Birmingham’s Legion Field. The leaders from the
Eastern and Western Divisions will do battle for conference
supremacy and the title of champion. The game will kickoff
at 1 pm and will be broadcast live on ESPN Classic.
