MVSU Devilettes to take on UCLA in NCAA
Soccer Tournament
November 7, 2005
The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes, one day removed from
capturing the school’s first title in women’s soccer,
had another first as the team received the Southwestern Athletic
Conference’s first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s
College Cup, the NCAA’s Division I women’s soccer
tournament.
The Devilettes (13-5-2) will travel to Los Angeles, California,
to face the national runner-up from last season, the Bruins
of California-Los Angeles (UCLA). The match will take place
Friday, November 11 at 5 p.m. at UCLA’s Drake Stadium.
Mississippi Valley State is coached by 2005 SWAC Coach of
the Year Dean Joseph and is led on the field by Sheena Cussen,
Sonia Curvelo and Maria Del Guercio. Cussen and Curvelo each
had eight goals and three assists while Del Guercio had 85
saves on the season. The team had a five-game winning streak
during the season and were unbeaten (2-0-1) during the conference
tournament.
MVSU will take on a tough UCLA team that found themselves
one shootout goal (4-3 shootout loss to Notre Dame) away from
a national championship last season. The Pacific-10 champion
currently sit with a 17-1-2 mark and are the number 1 seed
in the NCAA Regional (number 3 seed overall). UCLA is ranked
fourth in the NSCAA/adidas, Soccer America and Soccer Buzz
polls. The meeting will be the first between the Bruins and
the Devilettes.
Other teams participating in the sub-regional include UC-Riverside
(11-4-5) and Colorado (12-7-3)
