FAMU defeats NC A&T for fifth straight
MEAC volleyball title
November 19, 2005
GREENBORO, N.C.- Florida A&M captured its fifth consecutive
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship with
a 3-0 win over North Carolina A&T, Saturday afternoon at
the Greensboro Sportsplex. With the win, the Lady
Rattlers earn the leagues' automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
This is the eighth overall MEAC title for FAMU (21-4) and the
sixth title for Outstanding Tournament Coach, Tanio "Tony" Trifonov.
Florida A&M was led by 2005 MEAC Player of the
Year Adriana Kostadinova, who posted 13 kills and 4 aces.
The Lady Rattlers dominated on all ends of the court and held
North Carolina A&T
(22-18) to a hitting percentage .056 from the field.
FAMU jumped out early in the first game taking a 4-0 lead. The
Lady Aggies pulled within 6-4 behind kills by Darlene Mitchell
and a couple of FAMU errors. From that point, the Lady Rattlers
held NCAT to six points, as Kostadinova closed out game one by
serving eight straight points to win 30-10.
The second game was a much closer contest. With FAMU leading
21-16, Aundia Gray and Avignon Williams blocked a Kostadinova
attempt to make the score 21-17. Arlene Mitchell hit
her fourth kill of the game to make the score 26-21. But Kostadinova
came back with two kills of her own to end the game at 30-21.
Andreina Ruiz scored six of her eleven kills in game two to
lead FAMU.
N.C. A&T fought hard in game three, coming from a 27-18 deficit
to make it 27-24 late in the game. Maria Andonova had four of
her 10 kills in the final game to help secure the match for FAMU. Andonova
garnered tournament Outstanding Performer honors with 31 kills,
15 digs and nine digs for the weekend.
"Andonova stepped up and played extremely well this season…we
moved her from the middle hitter position to the left side this
season and she adjusted extremely well." said Florida A&M
coach Tony Trifonov.
Arlene Mitchell led the Lady Aggies with 11 kills and
seven digs, while Brendan Chatman finished with 17 assists
and eight digs. Both Mitchell and Chatman were named to the
All-Tournament team.
"This was the first championship for Arlene and Darlene Mitchell,
said North Carolina A&T coach, Millicent Sylvan. They are
only juniors, we expected a lot from them today and they played
well."
