Basil resigns as Savannah State’s
head football coach
March 14, 2006
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Richard Basil announced his resignation
as the Savannah State University head football coach on Tuesday
evening.
“The University has accepted his resignation, effective
immediately,” said Athletic Director Robert “Tony” O’Neal. “Basil
will be on administrative leave until May 14, 2006.”
While at SSU, Basil compiled an overall record of 2-26 over
a span of two and a half seasons. He began his career as a
head coach by stepping in as interim head coach midway through
2003, finishing that season with an 0-7 record.
In 2004, SSU finished 2-8 with wins over Division I-AA foe
Norfolk State University and NAIA opponent Allen University.
In 2005 the Tigers finished with a 0-11 record.
Basil has been a part of SSU athletics since he quarterbacked
for the Tigers during the 1988 and 89 seasons. Over the span
of 10 years, he has served on the SSU coaching staff as a quarterbacks
coach, receivers coach, special teams coach, defensive backs
coach and most recently head football coach.
“The administration will move quickly and efficiently
to find a valuable replacement in order for the football program
to continue to prepare for the 2006 season,” O’Neal
said.
SSU will launch a nationwide search immediately to identify
a new head coach for Tiger football.
