Clark comes to "The Valley" from Shaw
University where he served as head coach for
the Raleigh, North Carolina institution.
While at Shaw, Clark took the reigns of a football
program in 2003 that had been discontinued
in 1979. Under his leadership, the Bears compiled
a record of 22-10, with the best season coming
during the 2004 campaign. That year, Shaw went
10-2, won the CIAA Championship and defeated
Tuskegee 30-28 in the Pioneer Bowl.
“The field of candidates turned out
to be an excellent one, and that fact speaks
volumes about our university and its future.
Their quality reflects the quality of this
institution at the time when many schools struggle
to draw qualified candidates for key positions.
Much credit must go to our outstanding search
committee, whose members accomplished so much
work in such a relatively short time. Now,
we can turn to a bright future, as we welcome
Coach Clark into our family. As I often say, ‘A
new day truly has dawned in the Valley,’ “said
Rivers.
Clark’s selection also impressed Fort
Valley State’s Director of Athletics,
Gwendolyn Reeves.
“I am confident that Coach Clark will
take the Wildcat football program to a new
level and mold our young men to compete on
the field as well as in the classroom,” Reeves
said.
Clark will take over the reigns of a program
that has a winning tradition that has placed
numerous players in the NFL. Last year, FVSU
finished with a record of 7-3 (7-2 in the SIAC-3rd
Place) and was only one win away from an NCAA
playoff berth. The Wildcats also finished ninth
in the Sheridan Broadcasting Networks (SBN)
Black College Football Poll.
