Florida A&M offers Rubin Carter head
football coaching position

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida A&M University confirmed
Tuesday that former NFL and collegiate All-American tackle
Rubin Carter has been offered the school’s vacant position
of head football coach.

Carter, who was chosen from over 60 applicants, will be officially
presented at a Wednesday afternoon press conference at the
Florida Press Center, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
A native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Carter 52, brings 18
years of NFL and collegiate coaching experience, on both the
Division I-A and Division I-AA level to Florida A&M.
He served as the defensive line coach at Temple University
in 2004, facing many of the players he will now coach, when
the Owls took on FAMU last September.
Prior to joining the the Temple staff in March 2004, Carter
had served as the New York Jets’ Defensive Line Coach
for three seasons (2001 to 2003).
Before his stint with the Jets, he was the Washington Redskins’ Defensive
Line Coach for two seasons (1999-2000).
Carter first coached in the NFL with Denver under Dan Reeves
from 1987-88, directing the Broncos defensive line while also
assisting with strength and conditioning.
At the collegiate level, he was Defensive Coordinator and
Strength & Conditioning Coach at Howard University from
1989 to 1993, before serving as the Defensive Line and Strength & Conditioning
Coach at San Jose State in 1995 and 1996. At Maryland, he instructed
the defensive line from 1997-98.
Carter also had a distinguished professional playing career
spanning 12 seasons with the Denver Broncos from 1975 to 1986,
appearing in two Super Bowls.
A star prep athlete in football and track at Stranahan High
School, Carter went on to a stellar collegiate career
at the University of Miami, becoming the first African America
to receive All-American honors as a Hurricane football player
in 1974.
