Bethune-Cookman College Announces 2006 Football Schedule

February 23, 2006

(DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.) Bethune-Cookman College has officially announced the 2006 Wildcats football schedule. The schedule includes six (6) home games at Larry Kelly Field at Municipal Stadium and two classics.

The Wildcats will open the 2006 season with a match-up against the “Bayou Cats” from Baton Rouge, Louisiana – the Southern University Jaguars. The meeting will take place at Jacksonville’s Alltel Stadium as a part of the 53rd Annual Gateway Classic. It will be the first time these two teams have met since the 1998 Heritage Bowl which Southern won by a count of 28-2 in Atlanta, Georgia.

“I think mixed with the caliber of opponents we have on the schedule, as well as the type of team we are expecting to return this year, the 2006 schedule is going to be one of the most competitive in recent years,” states B-CC Director of Athletics, Lynn W. Thompson. “We have six home games at Municipal Stadium, and two classics in the Gateway [Jacksonville] and Walt Disney World Florida Classic [Orlando] that are sure to be one of a kind.”

The rest of the schedule features home dates against Savannah State (Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day) on Sept. 9; Norfolk State (Church and Community Day) on Sept. 23; Delaware State (Maroon and Gold Spirit Day) on Oct. 7; North Carolina A&T (Youth Sports Day) on Oct. 28 and Howard (Senior Day) on Nov. 11. The Wildcats will celebrate Homecoming on Oct. 14 against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference hopeful, Winston-Salem State University at 4 p.m.

All other game times will be released after the television schedule has been finalized.

“This year we have given each one of our home games a specific theme,” adds Thompson. “This is a way of showing appreciation to various groups and organizations in and around our community.”

Key road games for the Wildcats include match-ups at South Carolina State (Sept. 16) and at Hampton (Nov. 4).

The 2006 regular season schedule is concluded with the 27th Annual Walt Disney World Florida Classic against intrastate rival Florida A&M in Orlando, Florida on Nov. 18.

“This is by far one of the most exciting and toughest schedules we’ve had since I’ve been here,” states B-CC head football coach, Alvin B. Wyatt, Sr. “You talk about strength of schedule, and we have that this year with a complete, competitive I-AA schedule with very strong teams. You can probably say this is our toughest schedule in school history, but we will be ready to play … you can believe that.”
