"We are indeed very fortunate to attract someone of Robert
Brickey’s caliber to Shaw,” stated Dr. Newsome. “He
has excellent credentials, but more importantly, he has a love
for the students and believes in molding athletes who can be
leaders in our society.”
A native of Fayetteville, NC, Brickey most recently was an
assistant coach at James Madison University in Harrisonburg,
Virginia. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Southern
Methodist University in Dallas, and at the U.S. Military Academy
at West Point.
Brickey played four years at Duke from the 1986-87 season
through the 1989-90 season. He served as team captain in 1990
and received first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament
honors in 1988. He was a member of three Final Four teams and
started in the national championship game in 1990.
“I am an educator first. I like to keep things simple
one of my first goals is to lead young men to live successful
lives, to graduate,” said, Brickey. He also said in an
interview that he is committed to the vision of Dr. Newsome
who is proactive in building a strong athletic program. “We’ve
got to be able to win, recruit players and Coach K [Krzyzewski]
was one person who felt I could get it done,”
Brickey succeeds Michael Bernard who resigned, last week,
to pursue other employment opportunities. Bernard was the head
coach for three years at Shaw and left with a record of 40-46
at the school. His best season was his first (2002-03) when
his team finished 21-9 and earned a berth in the NCAA Division
II South Atlantic Regionals. Last season, his team finished
8-20.
Bernard is one of only two coaches to have won a men's basketball
national championship at an HBCU. His lifetime record is 362-202.
“We wish Coach Bernard well in his future endeavors
and appreciate his contributions to Shaw athletics,” Dr.
Newsome said.
