Cheyney names Tim Newsom head football
coach

Cheyney University President Wallace C. Arnold
has named Tim Newsom as the Wolves new head
football coach. Newsom comes to Cheyney after
serving as defensive coordinator/assistant
head coach for the Johnson C. Smith Golden
Bulls the last seven years.

Newsom came to
Johnson C. Smith from Savannah State University
in Savannah, Georgia, where he served as
the running back coach. Previously, he served
the Bulls as the Defensive Secondary Coach
and was responsible for the defensive secondary.
In 1992, Coach Newsom graduated from West
Virginia University where he received a Bachelor
of Science Degree in Physical Education. Newsom
played from West Virginia University where
he received many awards and honors such as:
1988 Fiesta Bowl National Championship Game,
1989 Gator Bowl Game, 1992 Ideal Mountaineer
and was perpetual member of the Athletic Director’s
Honor Roll.
Newsom began his coaching career at West Virginia
University, as a graduate assistant for the
Mountaineers. While in Morgantown he pursued
a Master’s degree in Community Health.
During 1994, he served as the running backs
coach at Juniata College. In 1995, he served
as a defensive assistant at James Madison University,
where he was responsible for assisting the
defensive coordinator and scouting offensive
opponents. As the defensive coordinator for
Johnson C. Smith, Newsom was responsible for
the total development of the Golden Bulls’ defensive
strategy.
