“I have enjoyed a great career here at Bethune-Cookman,
and I’ve loved every bit of it,” stated a saddened
Watten. “I especially love the lives I’ve touched,
and the impact I’ve had on this program. This [program]
is my baby, and it’s hard to walk away.”
In her almost nine-years at B-CC, Watten led the Lady ‘Cats
to five consecutive MEAC Championships (2000, ’01, ’02, ’03
and ’04), as well as six NCAA Regional appearances beginning
in 2000.
“It’s like losing a part of the family,” commented
Lynn Thompson (B-CC Director of Athletics). “Along with
the national recognition of the college and Lady Wildcats program,
also comes the attractiveness of a coach like Laura Watten.
She built this program into a nationally-ranked squad, and
it didn’t happen overnight.”
Watten, who has been one of the most successful softball
coaches in the history of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference,
led Bethune-Cookman to it’s first-ever NCAA Super Regional
appearance this past season in 2005.
“Laura’s leadership in coaching and recruiting
were a solid foundation upon which the program was built, and
her successor will have tremendous shoes to fill,” continued
Thompson. “A very quick and thorough national search
for a new head coach at Bethune-Cookman College has already
been launched. Based on all indications, we will have some
of the brightest stars in college softball inquiring.”
