August 9, 2005

ALCORN STATE, Ms. – The Alcorn State Athletics Department made official today the resignation of Tyrone C. Broxton as Sports Information Director. Broxton will assume the role of Athletics Media Relations Director at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.

Tyrone Broxton

In his two years at the institution, the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native earned Sports Information Director of the Year honors twice. In addition to drastically improving Alcorn State’s media guides and publications, Broxton’s greatest achievement came in July of 2004 with the unveiling of the new web home of ASU athletics, www.alcornsports.com.

Through the use of the medium, Alcorn State later launched three individual player sites for Corey Wimberly, Charlie Spiller and Nate Hughes to aid in the promotion of their exceptional on-field success, which was a first among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Wimberly went onto get drafted in the sixth round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft by the Colorado Rockies.

“I’ve had a great time at Alcorn State,” remarked Broxton. “I would like to thank my student workers; graphic artist Melvin Hodge, who does phenomenal work; Robert Raines for taking a chance on me, when no one else would after I graduated college; Brett Maresca and Athlete Web Services for putting a face on my vision of having one of the best college websites in the nation; my office mate Moses Dupre for always being there for me; Dr. Andrea Shadwick for her support and strength; my SWAC colleagues and the students athletes, coaches, alumni and fans. I will miss you all.”

At the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Broxton will be responsible for the promotion of 23 athletic programs.

“I’m looking forward to the unique challenge of working at one of the five United States service academies,” said Broxton. “I’ve always wanted to live in New York City, so I’m looking forward to the experience.”

Broxton, a 2003 graduate of Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania, received his degree in English-Communications. At LVC, Broxton made a name for himself as a three-year football letter-winner, student sport information assistant, sports editor of the campus newspaper and sports director and play-by-play announcer of the campus radio station (WLVC). He earned professional experience through internships with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Harrisburg Senators – an AA minor league Montreal Expos affiliate, and WHTM-TV abc27 in Harrisburg, Pa.
