MVSU three-peats as SWAC Softball Champion

April 30, 2006

Mississippi Valley State captured its third consecutive title as it downed Alcorn State 2-1 in nine innings in the finals of the 2006 SWAC Softball Championship. The game saw its complement of outstanding pitching and great defensive work in the outfield. Both teams scored a run in the fifth inning and played to a 1-1 stalemate after eight innings and were primed for play in the ninth.

After Alcorn State went down in their half of the ninth inning, Mississippi Valley State’s Nakelya Moragne reached and advanced on a fielding error. Two batters later, MVSU’s Balencia Young hit a hard grounder down the left field line to the third baseman. Her throw could not catch a running Young nor stop Moragne, running on the contact.

For Alcorn State, Michelle Obront scored the Lady Braves only run while going 2-for-2 from the plate. Melinda Ellis, Heather Pecore, Tonya Nelms and Yolanda Ellis each had a hit for the Lady Braves.

Megan Hays had two hits for Mississippi Valley while Jalana Brown and Moragne each scored a run for the champions.

Alcorn State’s Krista Mueller came on in relief and pitched 4 2/3 innings but received the loss. She struck out two and allowed one walk while on the mound. Mississippi Valley State Jalana Brown went nine innings allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts for the win.
