SPC Tigers Release 2006 Football Schedule
April 11, 2006
LAWRENCEVILLE, VA – The 2006 Saint Paul's
College Football Schedule is a dream come
true for loyal Tiger football fans. The balanced
schedule, which features 5 home and 5 away
contests, will allow the Tiger faithful to
be in the stands week after week. The furthest
of these contests will be a CIAA cross-division
match-up with the “Broncos” of
Fayetteville State University, a trip that
is less than 165 miles each way.
The Tigers will open their season on August
31st, traveling to Lynchburg, VA to take on
Division I-AA opponent Liberty University.
This will be Saint Paul’s first Division
I opponent that Saint Paul's College has faced
since the revitalization of its football program.
On September 9th, the Tigers will travel to
Durham, NC to take on the “Eagles” of
North Carolina Central University. The “Eagles” are
the reigning 2005 CIAA Football Champions.
This is the first time since these two teams
have faced-off since 1987, with NCCU having
an 11-6 edge in the series. Although, NCCU
is a member of the CIAA, this will be a Non-Conference
game for the “Tigers”.
The “Tigers’” home-opener
will take place on September 16th when SPC
is visited by Tusculum College. Tusculum College
is a NCAA Division II member of the South Atlantic
Conference. The “Pioneers” are
coming off of a 3-7 season including loses
to nationally ranked Carson-Newman and Presbyterian.
Tusculum won the SAC Football Championship
in 2003.
SPC will begin CIAA play on September 23rd
when they travel to Fayetteville, NC to take
on Fayetteville State University. Last season,
the “Broncos” defeated SPC 23-13
in the Clyde Williams Classic in Martinsville,
VA. FSU captured CIAA Championships in 2002
and 2003.
The Tigers will face off against another CIAA-Western
Division opponent on September 23rd, when they
play host to the “Golden Bulls” of
Johnson C. Smith University. JCSU is coming
off back-to-back 0-10 seasons. Last season
the “Tigers” ruined JCSU’s
homecoming festivities, defeating the “Golden
Bulls” 27-7.
October begins Saint Paul's College’s
CIAA-Eastern Division schedule. The Tigers
will
take on the “Panthers” of Virginia
Union University on October 7th in Richmond,
VA. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM. Last
season, the “Tigers” defeated the “Panthers” 41-35
in a Homecoming match-up. This is the only
road contest for SPC in the month of October.
Homecoming will take place in Lawrenceville,
VA on October 13th when the “Tigers” look
to avenge last season’s 26-20 triple-overtime
loss to the “Trojans” of Virginia
State University. This is the first of a 3-game
home stint for the Saint Paul's College. Kick-off
is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
Bowie State University, the 2005 CIAA-Eastern
Division Champions will travel to Lawrenceville,
VA on October 21st for a 1:30 pm kick-off.
The Bulldogs are coming off of an 8-4 season
including appearances in the 2005 CIAA Championship
Game and the 2005 Pioneer Bowl.
SPC’S final home contest of the season
will pit them against the Elizabeth City State
University “Vikings”. Last season,
ECSU edged the “Tigers” 8-6.
Saint Paul's College will conclude their regular
season in a road contest against the “Bears” of
Shaw University. SU, who finished 5-5 last
season, were CIAA and Pioneer Bowl Champions
in 2004. Last season, Saint Paul's defeated
Shaw University 21-14 in the Western Virginia
Education Classic.
