S.C. State wins MEAC Women's Tennis Title

Lady Bulldogs Win Second Straight Title; FAMU will face S.C. State in Men's Final

RALEIGH, N.C. -- South Carolina State defeated Bethune-Cookman, 4-0, to earn their second consecutive MEAC tennis championship Sunday at the Millbrook Tennis Center.  The Lady Bulldogs were led by Mirian Cruz. Cruz was named the tournament's Outstanding Performer after posting an undefeated record in tournament play.

South Carolina State won the match at the number six singles spot behind the play of Yana Lytkina. Lytkina, who was a last minute substitution for Alexis Panton, defeated Shaunda Gaiter 6-1, 6-0.

Cruz (18-0) earned all-tournament honors at the number one singles position, finishing 3-0 while allowing just six points during the tournament. Joining Cruz on the All-Tournament were  teammates Marcela Rodezno (No. 2) and Yana Lytkina (No. 6); Martina Strussova ( No. 3) and Kiara Powell (No. 4) of Bethune-Cookman and Jana Korycankoca (No. 5) of Hampton.   South Carolina State swept the all-tournament honors in doubles play. Mirian Cruz and Marcela Rodezno at the number one position, while Milana Borisev and Gisel Brito  won at the number two position. The duo of Alexis Panton and Vesna Popac rounded out the team at the number three spot. 

Head Coach Hardeep  (S.C. State) was named the Outstanding Coach for the second consecutive year. Judge guided his team to a 10-0 MEAC record to capture the number one seed in this year's tournament.
                                                               
On the men's side, South Carolina State, the number three seed, upset No. 2 Norfolk State, 4-0, in the men's semi-final match early Sunday morning. The Bulldogs will compete for their third consecutive MEAC Tennis Championship against Florida A&M on Monday at 9:00 a.m.

The Bulldogs led the match 1-0 after taking the doubles point yesterday before play was stopped due to weather. S.C. State dominated when play resumed today and won the number two, four and five singles positions in straight sets. Tomorrow's match-up will be the third consecutive year that Florida A&M and S.C. State will meet in the finals. The Rattlers will look to win their first men's title since 2000 and their eighth overall.
