Hampton releases 2006 football schedule

April 4, 2006

Hampton, Va. – Hampton University head football coach and interim Director of Athletics Joe Taylor has released the Pirates’ football schedule and the 11-game slate includes five home games, three traditional road games and three classics which will be played at neutral sites.

The defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champion Pirates will open the season on Sept. 2 against Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion Grambling State in the Ford MEAC-SWAC Challenge at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala. The game will be broadcasts live on ESPN2. Both the Pirates and Tigers finished 11-1 in 2005, sharing the Sheridan Broadcasting Network (SBN) Black College Championship.

Hampton plays its next two games at home inside of Armstrong Stadium, hosting Howard on Sept. 9 and North Carolina A&T on Sept. 16.

For the fourth consecutive year the Pirates will face Morgan State at Giants Stadium in the New York Urban League Classic (Sept. 23). Hampton has won all three meetings against the Bears in the classic, including a 44-14 victory last season.

On Sept. 30 Hampton travels to Delaware State for the first official road game of the season in what should be a great matchup against an improved Hornet squad that finished 6-2 in conference play in 2005.

Hampton returns to the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis for the first time since 1999 when the Pirates take on Central State University of Ohio at the RCA Dome on Oct. 7.

The annual “Battle of the Bay” against local rival Norfolk State will take place on Oct. 14 in Hampton and the following week the Pirates travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to visit the Bulldogs of South Carolina State.

Currently making the transition from Division II to I-AA, Winston-Salem State University will be the homecoming opponent for the Pirates on Oct. 28 and Hampton will close out its home schedule with a battle against Bethune-Cookman College on Nov. 4.

The regular season ends with a trip to Florida A&M on Nov. 11 and the Pirates have the following week (Nov. 18) off with hopes of resting up for the Division I-AA playoffs which begin on Nov. 25.
