Virginia State
43, Shaw 10
October 22, 2005
Raleigh, NC – Too many mistakes are
the three words that will describe the surprising 43-10
defeat the Shaw University Bears toke from the Trojans
of Virginia State. The Bears finished the afternoon with
two interception, one fumble and most of all 13 penalties
for 107 yards. The win put the Trojans in first place
with a 5-1 mark and put the Bears into a tie for second
with Bowie State at 4-2. Over-all the Trojans are 6-3
and the Bears are 5-4.
Going back to the mistakes, the biggest came with 59
seconds left in the third quarter and the Trojans leading
24-10. With the Bears working with a third and eight
at their own 33 yard line, VSU’s Pierre Lee intercepted
a Jermonty Kimbrough pass and returned it 40 yards and
a 30-10 Trojan lead. Three of the Trojans touchdowns
came after each one of the Bears turnovers.
The Bears got on the scoreboard first when Chester Charles
connected on a 39 yard field goal at the 12:49 mark of
the first quarter. The Trojans got on the scoreboard
when Michael Terry connected with David Roger on an 81
yard strike with no time left in the first quarter. That
score was the first seven of 21 unanswered points that
ended the half. Two of the Trojans second quarter scores
came off of Bear turnovers.
The Trojans finished the day with 349 yards of total
offense to the Bears 295. Big for the Trojans was Nick
Fleming who finished with 99 yards on 16 carries. Sophomore
quarterback Michael Terry also completed 7 of 15 passes
for 144 yards and three touchdowns.
SU quarterback Jermonty Kimbrough completed 19 of 48
passes for 202 yards, despite leaving the game late in
the first quarter with a sprained ankle.
Next week the Trojans will host the Bulldogs of Bowie
State and the Bears will travel to Roanoke, Virginia
to take on the Tigers of St. Paul’s College in
the Western Virginia Education Classic. If the Trojans
defeat Bowie State, they will win the East and the trip
to the CIAA Championship game. If Bowie State and Shaw
wins, there will be a three tie in the East for first
and a coin toss will decide who goes to the championship
game.
