Delaware State 41, Morgan State 14

Dover, DE --- Redshirt freshman quarterback Vashon Winton completed 11-of-18 passes for a career-high 227 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for another score, to lead Delaware State to a 41-14 homecoming win over Morgan State in MEAC football on Saturday.

It was the most points scored by the Hornets this season, and it was the first time MSU had lost to DSU since Donald Hill-Eley became the Bears' head coach; Hill entered the game with a 3-0 record against the Hornets.

DSU scored the last 34 points after trailing by seven in the second quarter.

The Hornets won their third straight to improve to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the MEAC. Morgan State fell to 2-6 and 1-4. Delaware State's MEAC and overall records are the team's best since 1993.

The Hornets scored first when Winton capped off a four-play, 41-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown on DSU's opening drive.The key play in the drive was a 30-yard pass from Winton to Shaheer McBride on the Hornets' first play from scrimmage.

Morgan State capitalized on a Delaware State turnover to tie the score. Four plays after a sack and fumble recovery by Larry Davis gave MSU the ball at the Delaware State 28, Byron Selby connected with Jason Jackson n a 14-yard touchdown pass with 5:30 left in the first quarter to even the game.

After Delaware State failed to get a first down on its next possession, Morgan State's Brandon Wells blocked the punt by Delaware State's Erik Contos to give the Bears the ball at the Hornets' 28. Morgan State capitalized with an eight-play drive that resulted in a three-yard touchdown run by Craig Nelson with 14:33 left in the second quarter.

Delaware State evened the score later in the second quarter. A 65-yard pass from Winton to Emmanuel Marc led to a one-yard touchdown by Rodney Roy with 4:55 left in the first half.

The Hornets regained the lead right before the half when Winton hooked up with McBride for an eight-yard touchdown to complete a five-play, 56-yard drive with 39 seconds left in the second quarter.

Winton and McBride gave Delaware State a 28-14 lead when they connected on a 56-yard scoring pass on the opening drive of the second half.

Roy scored on a three-yard run in the third quarter for his secon touchdown of the game, and Peter Gaertner added two second half field goals to close out the scoring.

Roy had a solid game for the Hornets as the senior finished with a game-high 139 yards on 28 carries with two TDs, his second straight 100-yard game. McBride had six catches for 138 yards. He has scored two touchdowns in each of the last two games.

Nelson led Morgan State with 46 yards rushing, while Selby completed 15 of 34 passes for 161 yards.

Delaware State visits South Carolina State next Saturday (Oct. 29), while Morgan State will host Florida A&M next weekend.
