TUSCALOOSA, AL--- After missing his two
previous field goal attempts Stillman senior place kicker,
Kevin Flemming, got a third chance to give the Tigers
a win against a tough Langston University football team
. Flemming connected on a game winning 37-yard field
goal with four seconds remaining in the game to put Stillman
ahead 34-31. With the win Stillman improves to a 3-0
home record in 2005 and an overall 21-8 record at Stillman
Stadium.
Langston opened the game with scoring drives. At the
6:11 mark in the first quarter Kendrick Dozier connected
with Jimmy Early for a 37-yard touchdown pass. Trint
Rust made the extra-point kick to give the Lions a 7-0
advantage. Four minutes later Cermase Barry capped a
five play, 30-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run.
Rust's kick made the score 14-0.
The Lions opened the second quarter with another score.
Rust made a 38-yard field goal at the 13:28 mark. After
three straight Langston scores Flemming finally got Stillman
on the scoreboard as he made a 41-yard field goal at
the 11:26 mark, cutting the lead to 17-3. In the second
quarter the dormant Stillman offense finally came to
life, as the Tigers scored two touchdown before halftime.
At the 8:58 mark Charles McCullum connected with Brett
Kimble for a nine-yard touchdown pass. Flemming's kick
cut the lead to 17-0. With 2:43 remaining in the half
Kimble and McCullum hooked up again. This time McCullum
competed a 14-yard pass play to cap a seven play, 70-yard
scoring drive. Flemming's kick made the score 17-17.
The Lions had a scoring duo of their own. Dozier and
Early connected one last time for a score. Early hauled
in a 66-yard touchdown pass at the 1:13 mark to reclaim
the lead. Rust's kick made the score 24-17 going into
halftime.
Stillman opened the second half with a four play, 61-yard
scoring drive that ended with a 9-yard touchdown run
by McCullum with 12:24 on the clock. Flemming's kick
tied the score at 24-24. Five minutes later Carlos Valasques
punched in a 2-yard run, that completed a seven play,
47-yard drive. Flemming's kick gave Stillman the 31-24
lead. Langston continued to fight to stay in the game.
At the six minute mark in the fourth quarter Cermase
Barry concluded a five-play, 83-yard drive with a two-yard
touchdown run. Rust's kick again tied the game at 31-31.
McCullum led the Tigers offensive attack as he completed
17 of 29 attempts for 212 passing yards and two TDs.
He also, rushed for 70-yards and a TD on 10 carries.
Dozier recorded 220 passing yards and two TDs. He completed
14 of 28 attempts and had one interception.
Valasques led all rushers with 77-yards and a TD on
21 attempts. Dozier recorded 52-yards on 14 attempts.
Langston's Early recorded a game high 189 receiving yards
and two TDs on five receptions. Phillip Bryant caught
six passes for 70-yards.
Stillman punter Sean Reck finished with a respectable
222-yards on seven punts (avg. 31.7 yds/punt).
Sophomore Harvey Logan led the Stillman defense with
10 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Brandon Johnson recorded a game high three sacks and
four tackles. Irving McGuire added two sacks and five
tackles. Denatay Heard recorded the only interception
of the game for Stillman.
Sergio Naff led the Langston defensive effort with 10
tackles and a forced fumble.
Stillman will return to action on Oct. 8 as the Tigers
host Benedict College at Stillman Stadium. Kick-off is
scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
