The Tigers of Saint Paul’s College
traveled to Martinsville, VA to take on the Fayetteville
State University Broncos in the 2nd Annual Clyde Williams
Classic. The defending CIAA Western Division champions
would prevail, defeating the Tigers by a final score
of 23-13. SPC would strike early in the contest on a
37-yard field goal by Shaun Gutierrez with 11:46 remaining
in the first quarter. The Tigers would continue to rely
on special teams, as Gutierrez kicked a second field
goal (47-yards) as time expired in the first half of
play. Gutierrez’s 2 field goals would be the only
points that the Tigers would post during the first half
of the contest.
The Tigers’ lone touchdown would be a 7-yard run
in the third quarter by Larry Graham. The Saint Paul’s
College ground attack would once again prove to be the
brighter side of the Tiger offense. The Tigers would
rush for 160 yards, while the aerial attack would be
responsible for 90 yards. Terrell Bailey would lead all
SPC running backs with 88 yards in the contest. Defensively,
the Tigers were lead by linebacker Mario Woods, who would
be responsible for 8.5 tackles and one sack.
SPC’S Shaun Gutierrez would be named the Clyde
Williams Classic Offensive Player of the Game. Defensive
honors would go to Fayetteville State’s Dante Wise.
This week, Saint Paul’s College (1-3) will travel
to Charlotte, NC to take on the Golden Bulls of Johnson
C. Smith University (0-4). Kick-off is scheduled to take
place at 6:00 pm on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University.
