September 10, 2005

TUSCALOOSA, AL--- Lightning did not strike a second time at Stillman Stadium when the Stillman Tigers faced the Morehouse Maroon. Stillman improved to 2-1; 2-1 record as the Tigers beat Morehouse 35-14 Saturday evening. With the loss Morehouse falls to a 1-2, 1-2 record.

The last time Morehouse visited Stillman Stadium, Sept. 10, 2001, the Maroon Tigers held a 24-21 lead late in the fourth

quarter when lightning flashes were spotted about a mile away from the field. Both teams went to their locker rooms as the storm passed. After roughly half an hour the Stillman Tigers took the field, but Morehouse piled onto the team buses and headed back to Atlanta. Eventually the game was ruled a "No Contest".

Saturday the Stillman Tigers finished what they started four years ago. Stillman got on the scoreboard first, when sophomore defensive back Brian Witherspoon picked off a Carlos King interception at the Stillman one-yard line and returned it 99-yards for the touchdown at the 10:31 mark in the first quarter. Senior kicker Kevin Flemming made the extra point kick to give Stillman a 7-0 lead. The interception return is the longest in Stillman history.

Stillman found the end zone again in the first quarter. Sophomore quarterback Charles McCullum connected with junior wide receiver Marcus Bryant on a 15-yard touchdown pass at the 3:13 mark. The reception capped a 10 play, 77-yard drive. Flemming's kick boosted Stillman's lead to 14-0.

Morehouse opened the second quarter with a four play, 24-yard drive that was capped with a 14-yard scoring pass from King to Raymond Johnson. Adam Williams' kick made the score 14-7 at the 14:54 mark. On the ensuing possession Stillman put a seven play, 61-yard scoring drive together that ended with sophomore Kenneth Brown hauling in a 10-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Quinton Wright at the 11:50 mark in the second quarter. Flemming's kick made the score 21-7.

With 1:09 remaining in the first half Morehouse's Brian Comer capped a seven play, 84-yard drive with a tough one-yard run. Williams' kick cut Stillman's lead to 21-14 going into half time.

In the fourth quarter Stillman put the game out of reach. At the 14:52 mark McCullum again connected with Bryant on a 16-yard touchdown pass. Flemming's kick increased Stillman's lead to 28-14. The Maroon Tigers continued to fight and on their second drive of the fourth quarter Morehouse got to the Stillman nine-yard-line and picked up only two-more yards on four downs.

The Tigers put the final nail in the coffin with 26 seconds remaining in the game when senior Kalvin Eaton intercepted a Ruben DuPree pass and returned it 60-yards for the final score of the game. Flemming converted the extra point kick.

The Stillman defense used a bend, but don't break philosophy. The Tigers gave 120 rushing yards and 171 passing yards, but allowed only two Morehouse scores. The Tiger defense also set a school record by racking up 159 interception return yards. The Stillman offense finally started clicking as the Tigers recorded 141 rushing yards and 193 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Morehouse's John Washington led all runners with 55-yards. Stillman sophomore running back Samuel Snelson followed with 43. McCullum recorded a game high 183 passing yards and two TDs on 15 of 24 attempts. Wright completed one of two pass attempts for 10-yards and a TD.

Stillman will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 25 when the Tigers host the Morehouse Golden Bears in the Fifth Annual Steel City Classic at Birmingham's Legion Field. The game is to be nationally televised on ESPNU. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
