Dover, DE --- Delaware State University
is 2-0 for the first time since 2002 after a 38-6 win
over Division II Millersville in the home opener at Alumni
Stadium on Saturday. Millersville fell to 2-1.
The point total was the most for the Hornets since a
41-9 win over Savannah State in 2002. The margin of victory
was also the most since that contest.
Tailback Rodney Roy rushed for a career-high 133 yards
and two touchdowns, and redshirt freshman quarterback
Vashon Winton completed 14 of 18 passes for 193 yards
and a score.
Delaware State out gained Millersville 471-262, while
out-rushing the Marauders 236-98.
The rushing total was the most for the Hornets since
posting 300 in a 2002 win at Howard.
Roy’s rushing yards were the most for the Hornets
since Dwayne Jenkins had 150 at Morgan State in 2002.
Delaware State scored first on a six-yard run by Roy
with 10:04 left in the first quarter. The play capped
off a 10-play, 67-yard drive. Emmanuel Marc had a 16-yard
run and Roy had a 13-yard run during the drive.
The Hornets pulled ahead 14-0 when Vinton connected
with Shaheer McBride on a 77-yard touchdown with 7:450
left in the opening frame. It was Winton’s first
collegiate touchdown pass. McBride had seven catches
for a career-high 140 yards.
Delaware State stretched its lead to 21-0 when Roy scored
on a three-yard run with seven seconds left in the first
quarter. The three-play, 23-yard drive was set-up by
an interception and 27-yard return by cornerback Blake
Saunders, his second pick of the year.
The Hornets opened up a 28-0 lead when Marc capped off
a six-play, 76-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown
run with 9:56 left in the second quarter. Roy’s
53-yard run was the big play in the drive.
Millersville got on the scoreboard for the first time
when Doug Rhul’s 32-yard field goal cut the Hornets’ lead
to 28-3 with 7:21 left in the second quarter.
Delaware State’s Peter Gaertner hit a 46-yard
field goal to give the Hornets a 31-3 lead at the half.
After another 32-yard field goal by Ruhl cut the Hornets
lead to 31-6. Delaware State closed out the scoring on
Billy Henderson’s eight-yard touchdown run with
13:47 left to play.
Millersville quarterback Dan Csencsitz completed 16
of 31 passes for 164 yards. He was intercepted twice.
Halfback Juan Jones rushed for 74 yards on 15 carries
for the Marauders.
The Hornets will try to go 3-0 for the first time since
1986 when they travel to Harrisonburg, VA to take on
defending I-AA champ James Madison next Saturday at 6:00
p.m.
