Bowie State 35,
Morgan State 21
September 10, 2005
(BALTIMORE, MARYLAND) Bowie State
University avenged last season’s
41-35 loss to Morgan State, running all over the Bears
defense enroute to a 35-21 victory. “It’s
a great day for our program,” said BSU Head Coach
Mike Lynn with a chuckle. “To come up here and
play against a I-AA program that outnumber us financially
and with greater resources and for our guys to just
take all that in shows we are capable of competing
with anybody!”
Sophomore running back Isaac Redman and junior quarterback
Lamar Manigo led the rushing onslaught, garnering 209
and 113 yards respectively. In fact, Redman had a career
night, setting a new BSU single game rushing yards record
(209), surpassing Butch Wilson’s 208 yards set
in 1991. Not only that, Redman broke BSU’s single
game rushing attempts record with 32 carries (29 by Ray
Hawkins in 1998) and set a new Bowie State record for
the longest run from scrimmage (99 yards), surpassing
Mike Gaskill’s mark of 90 yards in 1983.
The Bulldogs (3-0 / 1-0 in the CIAA) lit up the scoreboard
first on a 9-yard touchdown run by Redman at the 7:45
mark of the first quarter. Redman, the games MVP for
Bowie State, notched his second TD of the quarter with
2:15 left in the period, this time from 25 yards out,
putting Bowie State in front 14-0 after one quarter.
Bowie State completed dominated Morgan State in the first
15 minutes of play, rolling up 122 yards in total offense
while holding the Bears to only 2 yards in total offense.
To further illustrate BSU dominance, throw in the first
down comparison … Bowie State 9 and Morgan State
1.
Bowie State’s Glenn Thomas scored his third and
longest touchdown of the season when Manigo connected
with him for a 49 yard touchdown just after the start
of the second quarter. It was Redman time again, as the
sophomore from Paulsboro, NJ rumbled 99 yards with 5:42
remaining in the second quarter, increasing the Bulldogs
lead to 28-0. Morgan State managed to put its first points
on the board with 1:39 left before halftime on a 6-yard
rushing TD by quarterback Byron Selby and two point conversion
by Tyree Spinner, making the score 28-8 Bulldogs. BSU
quickly responded one minute later on a 5-yard rushing
touchdown by Nathaniel Queen, pushing the Bulldogs lead
to 35-8. However, the Bears’ Selby recorded his
second rushing TD of the night, this time from 5 yards
out, cutting their deficit to 35-14 heading into halftime.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Morgan State (0-2)
scored its final points of the game with just under 14
minutes to play on a Jason Jackson 2-yard rushing touchdown,
making the score 35-21 Bowie State. MSU’s Selby
led the Bears on offense accounting for 266 total yards
(236 passing) and was named the Prince Mason Classic
MVP for Morgan State.
As a team, Bowie State amassed 479 yards in total offense
(394 rushing) and intercepted the Bears three times.
Leading the way on defense was senior Sterling Green
with 10 total tackles, which included five tackles for
a loss of 24 yards and two sacks for 18 yards. BSU junior
Terrence Stafford recorded his best game of the season,
racking up 9 total tackles followed by senior Tyreve
Smith with six total tackles.
Bowie State returns to action next Saturday (9/17) when
the Bulldogs host the Livingstone College Blue Bears
at 1:00 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
