TUSCALOOSA, AL--- After suffering a 32-20 loss to the Tuskegee Tigers
the Stillman Tigers got their first win as a full-fledge member of the
Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Stillman beat a tough Lane
College team 23-13 Saturday evening. With the win Stillman improves to
a 1-1 overall record and 1-1 conference record.
For the second consecutive week the Tigers started slow offensively,
but picked up the pace after getting a jump start from the special teams.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard first as senior Kevin Flemming made
a 22-yard field goal as the clock expired in the first half, making the
score 3-0.
The Tigers got a spark on the opening kick-off of the second half as
sophomore defensive back Brian Witherspoon found a lane and returned
it 84-yards for the touchdown. Flemming's extra point kick made the score
10-0 at the 14:14 mark. The Dragons got their first points of the game
when junior kicker Justin Miranda made a 23-yard field goal to cap an
11 play, 65-yard drive, making the score 10-3.
Stillman continued to add to its lead when sophomore Samuel Snelson
scored from seven-yards out. Flemming's kick made the score 17-3 at the
5:44 mark in the third. However, the Dragons continued to fight as junior
Edward Williams hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Sherard Ellis
to cap an eight play, 59-yard drive. Miranda's extra point kick made
the score 17-10.
The Dragons scored their final points of the game when Miranda made
a 26-yard field goal with 10:13 remaining in the game. Stillman finally
put the game out of reach at the 6:44 mark when sophomore Charles McCullum
capped a seven play, 52-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run. The
extra point kick failed, making the score 23-13.
Stillman's Derrick Rogers, a sophomore running back, led all rushers
with 45 yards from scrimmage. Snelson followed with 24 yards and a TD.
Sophomore running back Gerald Stinson led Lane with 29 rushing yards.
McCullum led the Tigers passing attack as he completed eight of 15 attempts
for 101-yards and an interception. He also scored a rushing TD. Ellis
led Lane with 156 passing yards, connecting on eight of 15 attempts with
one TD and an interception.
Lane's Jones Jacoby led all receivers with five catches and 111 receiving
yards. Stillman's Marcus Bryant followed with three receptions for 57
yards.
Stillman sophomore defensive back Larry Albert led all defenders with
13 total tackles. Sophomore defensive back Denatay Heard led the Tigers
with an interception (returned for 43 yards). Larry Brown led Lane with
11 and Brad Campbell recorded an interception for seven yards.
Stillman will return to action Saturday, Sept. 10 as the Tigers host
the Morehouse College Tigers at Stillman Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled
for 5 p.m.
