Saint Paul's 20, Central State 6

September 4, 2005

Central State University fell victim to Saint Paul’s College in the 1st annual Dayton Classic at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, OH over the Labor Day weekend. Both the Marauders of Central State University and the Saint Paul’s College Tigers were looking to capture their first victory of the season. SPC would prevail, downing CSU by a score of 20-6. Much like Saint Paul’s College, Central State is sponsoring football for the first time in years. The last time CSU took the field was in 1996, SPC in 1987.

Although the Tigers competed 17 years ago in the CIAA, SPC would finish that season 0-11 making this the first victory that the Tigers would capture in 18 years. SPC kicker Shaun Gutierrez would be responsible for 8 of the Tigers’ 20 points contributing 2 field goals and converting 2 point-after attempts. The Tigers led the entire contest. After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers took the lead on a 14-yard touchdown run by Terrell Bailey. SPC would reach the end zone once more before the conclusion of the contest. After a blocked field-goal attempt, Jerome Mann would recover the ball and convert it into a 12-yard touchdown run for the Tigers.

The Tigers turned in 297 yards of total offense on 64 plays. The SPC rushing game would prove to be fruitful, being responsible for 234 yards. Tiger running back Terrell Bailey was selected as the MVP of the Dayton Classic after rushing for 70 yards on 21 carries.

This Saturday, Saint Paul’s College (1-1) will travel to Cheyney, PA to take on the Wolves of Cheyney University (1-1) in the Wade Wilson Classic. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
