Catawba 38, Livingstone 6

Salisbury, NC – In the Fifth Annual Mayor’s Cup game, Catawba College (2-0 Overall) hosted cross town rival Livingstone College (0-2 overall). History continues to repeat itself with the Indians winning all contests since 1971 (7 games); and today's contest with a 38-6 victory.

Catawba punted on its first possession but managed 64 yards in 11 plays to score on its second. Brad Roach connected with Corey Ready for the 12-yard touchdown pass. Livingstone quickly answered back on the next drive with Tyrone Baisdon returned the kickoff 58 yards to the Catawba 33-yard line. At fourth down and one yard for a first, Arturo Ruiz kicked a 45-yard field goal for a 3-7 first quarter score.

Catawba scored twice more in the second quarter with a 14-yard run by Walter Horne with 12:33 on the clock. The score capped seven plays and 59 yards. Roach passed for another touchdown when he threw a seven yard pass to Rod Tenor with 4:12 on the clock.

After the half time intermission, Livingstone drove 47 yards in nine plays to kick another field goal by Ruiz. The drive started with a 21-yard kickoff return by Baisdon. The field goal was for 36 yards.

Down 21-6, injuries and fatigue began to take affect on the Blue Bears. Catawba hit the boards again on their next drive after the offense drove the ball 92 yards in 12 plays for the score. Kory Fisher rushed the ball ten yards into the endzone with 3:55 remaining in the third quarter.

Catawba maintain possession of the ball for the majority of the fourth quarter. The Indians had possession when the third quarter ran out and the kept the ball and moved it 91 yards in ten plays for the next score. Roach threw a 11-yard touchdown pass to Antwan Strong with 9:43 remaining. The final score of the game was at 2:32 remaining, when Cory Darnell kicked a 24-yard field goal.

Catawba’s offense was on the field for 34:49 minutes while the Blue Bears were on for 25:11. Livingstone has 11 penalties for 109 yards while Catawba had 11 for 89 yards. Livingstone was only able to convert three of 12 third-down conversions and Catawba has ten of 14.

On the bright side, Livingstone had seven kickoff returns for 158 yards. Tyrone Baisdon returned six kickoffs for 150 yards. Keith Webster once again led the defense with 13 tackles.

Livingstone will host Virginia Union Saturday, September 10 in Alumni Memorial Stadium at 6:00 pm. Catawba will travel to Petersburg, VA to challenge Virginia State University.
