November 5, 2005

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Senior tailback Rashard Pompey turned in a scintillating curtain call in his final home game in Bragg Stadium Saturday, rushing for 265 yards and two TDs to power the Florida A&M Rattlers to a 24-14 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football victory over the North Carolina A&T Aggies.

Saturday's performance by Pompey was the second-highest single-game rushing total in FAMU history behind Willie Galimore's 295 yards against Maryland State in 1955.

FAMU (5-4, 4-2 in MEAC), won its' third straight game Saturday for the first time since 2003, while slumping North Carolina A&T (3-7, 2-5), dropped their fourth straight game.

Saturday was Senior Day at Florida A&M, as the university honored 20 players in pregame ceremonies, along with members of their families.

Pompey, a 5-11, 200-pounder from Tallahassee, was mistakenly introduced as the third-leading rusher in FAMU history.

But the soft-spoken youngster rushed for 84 yards in the first half on 12 carries, pulling even with James Rackley, who rushed for 2,611 yards from 1971-74.

In the second half, Pompey went wild, rushing for 181 yards on 18 carries, scoring two touchdowns, as the Rattlers pulled away to a 24-0 lead with 10:40 left in the game.

  • Pompey's performance Saturday was his third straight 100-yard efforrt and his fourth of the season.
  • The former Tallahassee Godby High star moved into sole possession oof third place on the FAMU Career Rushing Charts with 2,792 on 676 carries with 20 TDs.
  • He needs 208 yards in the final two games - against league-leading Hampton and archrival Bethune-Cookman - to reach the magical 3,000-yard plateau.
  • He would be just the third FAMU back to rush for over 3,000 yards in his career, joining Willie Galimore (3,592 yards • 1953-56) and Antonio "Tony" Barber (3,278 yards • 1983-86).
