Glenville State 33, Johnson C. Smith 9

Charlotte, NC – (August 27, 2005) - The Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University (0-1, 0-0 CIAA) took on the Pioneers of Glenville State College (West Virginia, 1-0) today on a sunny day at the Irwin Belk Complex in Charlotte, NC. The team who was looking for their first win at the Irwin Belk Complex will have to wait until September 17 to accomplish that feat. Sporting new uniforms, the Bulls were ready to hit the field in front of a pretty decent crowd of 2,394 excited fans.

The Pioneers under the direction of head coach Alan Fiddler and behind the leadership and prowess of senior quarterback Joey Conrad were first to hit the scoreboard on a safety after an intentional grounding call was made against the Golden Bulls. The Pioneers used a powerful and balanced offensive attack racking up on 407 yards of total offense to secure the victory. Conrad finished the day completing 21 of 33 passes for 223 yards and four scores.

Punt and kick-off return was a definite bright spot in today’s contest. JCSU’s first points came on a 25-yard field goal by Herbert Collins, III. That drive began with a 68-yard kickoff return by Anthony Daigle. The only time JCSU broke the plane was on a 10-yard run by freshman Andre’ Williams which was set-up by Marquis Belton’s 51-yard punt return.

“We have a long way to go”, said head coach Daryl C. Mcneill. “The kids played well in spots. I still thought we could have won this game. We just could never get it together.”

Defensively, George Pope, III led all defenders with 12 tackles (2 solo, 10 assisted) and one interception returned for 10 yards. He had help for sophomore lineman Earl Sharpe and senior linebacker Chris Nelson. Sharpe and Nelson combined for 20 tackles, 1.5 for a loss of 7 yards, and a sack for 4 yards.

Next up for JCSU will be the Bulldogs of Bowie State University. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm in Bowie, MD at Bulldog Stadium. The series meeting between the two schools is 12-8-0 in favor of the Golden Bulls.
