Dr. Eve Atkinson, the previous AD, who was part time administrator and part time faculty, will remain on the faculty as a full professor within the Department of Recreation. Cheyney has also appointed Jada Pierce as Head Women’s Basketball Coach. Pierce replaces Tara Owens who left Cheyney to take over the program at Elizabeth City State University (NC). Simon comes to Cheyney with a myriad of athletic administration experiences. He has served as Director of Athletics at Lincoln University (MO), interim Associate Director of Athletics at Kutztown University, Athletic Administrative Consultant at Northeastern Illinois University, Director of Athletics at the Central Heights (MN) Public School District, St. Paul’s College (Lawrenceville, VA), and Allen University (Columbia, SC), Associate Athletic Director at St. Augustine’s College (Raleigh, NC) and Director of Academic Advising at Fayetteville (NC) State University. Simon has also coached football and basketball on the collegiate level. Simon is a 1977 graduate of Johnson C. Smith University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He earned his master’s degree in education from Clark-Atlanta University in 1989.
Pierce comes to Cheyney after three seasons as first assistant with the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. While at the Division II school, she was the Recruiting Coordinator while evaluating talent and assisting in scouting and coaching the guards. During her tenure at UML, the River Hawks compiled a 51-36 record, appearing in the Northeast 10 Conference all three seasons and securing an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2003. A native of Philadelphia, she is a 1997 graduate of West Chester University. Prior to her stint at UML, she was an assistant coach at the University of Delaware (1999-2001) and Saint Michael’s College (1997-1999). Pierce, a four-year player at West Chester University, as co-captain helped guide the team to a 22-7 mark her senior year. She started all 29 games en route to being crowned champion of the Eastern Division of the PSAC and securing a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Pierce played her high school basketball at Central High School in Philadelphia. She was captain of the team her senior year and named First Team Philadelphia All Public League (1992) and a Philadelphia Public League All-Star (1990-91). In other athletic related moves the University announced the hiring of Dinah Johnson Wright as Head Volleyball Coach, Rhonda Thompson as Head Cross Country Coach and the promotion of Tony Wrice to Associate Head Football Coach.
