announces pre-season women's basketball predictions

GREENBORO, N.C. The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has announced its
pre-season basketball predictions and All-MEAC selections.
Delaware State was chosen
by the leagues’ Head Coaches and Sports Information Directors as the
favorites to win the 2004-05 MEAC crown. The Lady Hornets’ Mandy Clark
earned pre-season Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive
season.
Delaware State, who received 13 of the 22 first place votes, edged out
2003-04 co-champion and tournament champion Hampton University by 10 votes
for the top spot. The Lady Hornets and Lady Pirates finished tied at 14-4 in
the MEAC standings last year. Delaware State earned the top seed in the
MEAC Tournament by virtue of the tiebreaker.
Coppin State earned two first place votes for the third spot, followed by
Florida A&M Howard to round out the top five.
Clark, the 2003-04 Player of the Year, was a unanimous selection for the
2004-05 preseason All-MEAC first team. Clark finished tied for first in
scoring in the MEAC last year, averaging 15.6 points per game.
Joining Clark on the pre-season All-MEAC first team is her back court mate,
Terrelle Waller (5-6, Sr. Guard), along with Katie Clark (5-8, Jr. Guard) of
Bethune-Cookman, Hampton’s Sharema Dean (5-10, So. G/F), and Coppin State’s
Leisel Harry (6-3, Sr. Center).
The 2004-05 NCAA basketball season officially opens on Saturday, October 16.
Maryland-Eastern Shore opens the MEAC season with a home game on November 10
against Wilmington College. Morgan State will host Shaw on November 13. A
full slate of games will take place on Friday, November 19 as seven MEAC
schools begin their 2004-05 season.
Conference competition begins on December 4.
