Lady Bulldogs fall to Florida in NCAA Div I Tennis Playoffs

GAINESVILLE, FL - The South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs' (23-2, 10-0 MEAC)
fantastic season ended Friday afternoon, falling to the #2 Florida Gators (20-2,
9-2 SEC)
afternoon at the Linder Stadium at the Ring Tennis Complex. After a pair of tough
losses
in doubles play, the Lady Bulldogs were dominated in singles competition to take
just
their second loss of the season.
"The team played really well . . . we played very well although it wasn't
reflected on the
scoreboard," SCSU head coach Hardeep Judge said following the loss. "Most
of the
matches were very close, but Florida is playing on a different level at this
time and they
won the key points."
The Lady Bulldogs suffered doubles losses at the #1 and #3 position to drop
the first
point of the match. Both pairs fell by scores of 8-1, while the freshman tandem
of Mirian
Cruz and Marcela Rodezno played to a 4-4 tie when the match was suspended.
Cruz and
Rodezno end the 2005 season with a 20-1 record.
In singles play, the Lady Bulldogs took losses at the #4, #6, and #5 position
to seal the 4-0 match loss. Sophomore Milana Borisev took the first loss
of singles play falling to
Whitney Benik in a pair of 6-0 losses. Junior Alexis Panton took the second
loss of the
match falling to #113 Lolita Frangulyan, 6-0 and 6-1. The loss was Panton's
second of
the season as she ends 2005 with a 17-2 record in singles play. Sophomore Gisel
Brito
dropped the clinching point falling to Alex Liles, 6-0 and 6-1.
Three games were still in play when the match was ended, each with the Lady
Bulldogs
trailing 0-1. After dropping the first set 6-0, SCSU sophomore Vesna Popac
trailed #5
Jennifer Magley 4-1 in the second set when play was called. Freshman Marcela
Rodezno,
who also fell 6-0 in the first set, trailed #13 Zerene Reyes 4-1 when the match
ended.
Fellow freshman Marcela Rodezno, also dropped her first set 6-0, was trailing
#108 Nina
Suvak, 2-1 when the match ended.
"I am very happy with the season and applaud my team for their effort," Judge
added.
"And we will work to get to the level that Florida and other major schools
are at this
time."
