May 13, 2005

GAINESVILLE, FL - The South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs' (23-2, 10-0 MEAC) fantastic season ended Friday afternoon, falling to the #2 Florida Gators (20-2, 9-2 SEC) afternoon at the Linder Stadium at the Ring Tennis Complex. After a pair of tough losses in doubles play, the Lady Bulldogs were dominated in singles competition to take just their second loss of the season.

"The team played really well . . . we played very well although it wasn't reflected on the scoreboard," SCSU head coach Hardeep Judge said following the loss. "Most of the matches were very close, but Florida is playing on a different level at this time and they won the key points."

The Lady Bulldogs suffered doubles losses at the #1 and #3 position to drop the first point of the match. Both pairs fell by scores of 8-1, while the freshman tandem of Mirian Cruz and Marcela Rodezno played to a 4-4 tie when the match was suspended. Cruz and Rodezno end the 2005 season with a 20-1 record.

In singles play, the Lady Bulldogs took losses at the #4, #6, and #5 position to seal the 4-0 match loss. Sophomore Milana Borisev took the first loss of singles play falling to Whitney Benik in a pair of 6-0 losses. Junior Alexis Panton took the second loss of the match falling to #113 Lolita Frangulyan, 6-0 and 6-1. The loss was Panton's second of the season as she ends 2005 with a 17-2 record in singles play. Sophomore Gisel Brito dropped the clinching point falling to Alex Liles, 6-0 and 6-1.

Three games were still in play when the match was ended, each with the Lady Bulldogs trailing 0-1. After dropping the first set 6-0, SCSU sophomore Vesna Popac trailed #5 Jennifer Magley 4-1 in the second set when play was called. Freshman Marcela Rodezno, who also fell 6-0 in the first set, trailed #13 Zerene Reyes 4-1 when the match ended. Fellow freshman Marcela Rodezno, also dropped her first set 6-0, was trailing #108 Nina Suvak, 2-1 when the match ended.

"I am very happy with the season and applaud my team for their effort," Judge added. "And we will work to get to the level that Florida and other major schools are at this time."
