announces Women's Basketball Honors

RICHMOND, Va. – Coppin State forward Sherrie Tucker was selected 2005 Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, as voted by the leagues’ Head Coaches and
Sports Information Directors. Head Coach Derek Brown also of CSU was selected by his peers as
the 2005 Coach of the Year. Rachel Butler of Hampton, earned Rookie of the Year honors.
Tucker led the MEAC in scoring averaging 16 ppg and ranks in the top ten in both field goal ( and
free throw percentages. She helped the Lady Eagles to their best conference record (15-3) in the
school’s history and their fist outright MEAC regular season title.
Brown led his team to their first 20-win season since the 1992-93 season. Despite a number of
injuries Coppin State won their second title in school’s history, as they were picked third in the
MEAC preseason poll.
Butler led all rookies in scoring (12.4 ppg), steals (2.0 spg), free throw percentage (.773) and threepoint
percentage (.329). She received the rookie of the week accolade two times this season. Butler
is the second Lady Pirate to receive the award in as many years.
Joining Tucker on the All-MEAC First Team is guards Daisha Hicks of Howard, North Carolina A&T
State’s Shareka Glover, forwards Ariel Towns of Florida A&M and South Carolina State’s Evena
Morency.
Three Lady Pirates were named the All-MEAC second team including Rookie of the Year Rachel
Butler, last year’s Rookie of the Year guard Sharema Dean and center Tiffani Williams. Rounding
out the team are Bethune-Cookman’s guard Katie Clark and forward Leisel Harry (Coppin State).
The Rookie team consists of Butler, guards Rashida Suber (Coppin State), Laquita Ball (South
Carolina State), forward Raquel Collier (Delaware State) and center Kristi Veltkamp (Maryland-
Eastern Shore).
