Hampton’s 2005 Football Schedule Mirrors Last Year’s Slate

March 16, 2005

Hampton, Va. – Hampton University Director of Athletics Malcolm Avery, along with Head Football Coach Joe Taylor released the Pirates’ 2005 football schedule today. All but one opponent remains the same. And after playing seven games at home a year ago, the Pirates will do battle on the field of Armstrong Stadium just four times this season.

The defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champion Pirates will open the season on September 3 at Ford Stadium in Detroit, where they will take on the Tigers of Jackson State in the Detroit Labor Day Classic. The game is the first of three “classics” for Hampton, with the others being the New York Urban League Classic (Sept. 24) at Giants Stadium against Morgan State, and the Battle of the Bay Classic at cross-bridge rival Norfolk State on October 15.

Hampton’s second non-conference opponent will be the Runnin’ Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb out of the Big South Conference, who will host the Pirates on October 8 in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.

Homecoming festivities have been set for October 22 when South Carolina State will try to put an end to Hampton’s four-game homecoming winning streak. Back as a member of the MEAC in 2005, Florida A&M will close out the conference schedule on November 12 in Hampton, while the Pirates wrap up the regular season at home versus Savannah State the following weekend on November 19.
