Bowie State names Toni Conway new volleyball
coach

BOWIE, MARYLAND – Bowie State University
Athletic Director Derek Carter has announced the appointment
of Toni N. Conway as the new head coach of the Lady Bulldogs
Volleyball program. Conway brings over 15 years of volleyball
playing and coaching experience to the Bulldogs.
“We took
our time interviewing for the volleyball head coaching position
and honestly feel Toni is the right choice,” said Carter. “Her
commitment to student success, both on and off the court, should
prove to be a valuable asset to our department.”
Conway earned her bachelors of Science degree in Health, Physical
Education and Fitness and Wellness Management, at North Carolina
Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro,
NC, where she enjoyed a successful career playing Division
I volleyball as an outside hitter and a defensive specialist.
While at NCA&T, Conway was a team and conference
leader in service aces and defensive digs. Conway was also
a member of the Aggie swim team for two years. As a scholar
athlete she also represented her school as the President of
her major’s club.
Conway comes to Bowie after building a number of competitive,
state-contending programs while working the past three years
at Oxon Hill High school as the Head Varsity Volleyball, Tennis
and, Co-head Swimming coach. “I am excited about this
new opportunity and I’m ready to facilitate change.
I’m
confident that the 2005 season will be exciting. With seven
players returning, we should have a solid core of experience,” said
Conway.
As a member of the Chesapeake Region Volleyball Association,
Conway earned her increased mastery and professional application
of coaching theory certification from USA Volleyball. Following
certification, Conway joined the coaching staff of the Outsiders
Junior Olympic Volleyball Club, in PG County, MD where she
was the head coach of the 18’s travel team. At present
Conway is the Head coach of the Metro American 18’s Regional
team, located in Washington, DC.
Ms. Conway works full-time at Oxon Hill (MD) High School,
as a Health teacher and Department Chairperson. In her short
career as an educator she has been honored as New Teacher of
the Year (OHHS, 2001-2002) and as one of the nation’s inspiring and respected educators
by Who’s Who of American Teachers.
