NSU Receives Accreditation Through National
Strength And Conditioning Association
July 23, 2004
NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State University
has been accredited by the National Strength and Conditioning
Association (NSCA), NSU strength and conditioning coach Dr.
Rodney Gaines announced Thursday.
In order to receive the accreditation, the department had
to submit a 200-page document, which included training modalities,
a core curriculum syllabus and major class syllabus.
The NSCA consists of 30,000 members across the world, and
Norfolk State is one of an elite group of 46 other universities
that have received the accreditation. NSU is the first Virginia
school and HBCU to receive the honor.
NSU athletes and students in the Health and Physical Education
department will receive the following benefits from being
accredited through the NSCA:
- The students enrolling in the HPE program will be able
to tell employers that their university was accredited
through the NSCA, and they will also take classes especially
designed to help them pass personal training and strength
coach certifications.
- The school’s program will be listed on the NSCA
website, which gets over 1 million hits a month, and the
NSU website will be linked on http://www.nsca.com
- School will be listed in the many bulletins and other
journals published by the organization.
- NSU will also be able offer graduate level courses nationally
and locally through the accreditation
- NSU may post job vacancies on the website as well as
graduate assistantships, internships, faculty positions,
etc.
“I think this will also help recruit prospective athletes
to the university,” Gaines said. “To see that
the program is accredited through the NSCA will let recruits
know that they’re guaranteed to receive high-level
strength and conditioning programs as well as course content
in classes of that nature.”
