July 25, 2004
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Fayetteville State University Chancellor
T.J. Bryan has announced that Dr. Major Boyd will serve
as Interim Athletic Director at FSU. Dr. Boyd will begin
his duties Aug. 2, 2004. No timetable has been set for naming
a permanent athletic director.
A 1960 graduate of FSU with a degree in elementary education,
Boyd will oversee the coaches and daily operations of FSU's
12-sport athletic department. He has years of athletic experience
to include playing, coaching and academic counseling. Boyd
was the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)
long jump champion in 1959, and was captain of the track
and field and basketball teams during his junior and senior
years. He is a member of the FSU Athletic Hall of Fame and
CIAA Hall of Fame. FSU is a member of the CIAA, the nation's
oldest black athletic conference.
Boyd was a CIAA basketball official for thirty years and
officiated basketball and football games in the Atlantic
Coast Conference (ACC) and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
(MEAC).
Boyd said he looks forward to returning to FSU to help
build on its strong legacy of serving student-athletes.
"It's is very good to have an opportunity to go back
and help the University continue to be the great university
it has always been," Boyd said, "The athletic department
has been a very strong part of the university over the years,
and I hope to continue to build on that great history at
FSU."
After graduating from FSU, Boyd earned a master of science
degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State
University in Greensboro, and a doctorate from Georgia State
University in Atlanta. He has certificates in management
training and multicultural curriculum development and planning
from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He
worked in public education as a teacher, counselor, coach
and administrator at the junior and senior high school levels.
He worked as an instructor, counselor and administrator at
Lenoir Community College in Kinston, and was employed as
Associate Vice President of the Community College System
Office in Raleigh.
Boyd comes to FSU during an important time for the athletic
department. The school is in the process of renovating Luther "Nick" Jeralds
Stadium, and the football team is looking to win its third
consecutive CIAA championship. The prospect of seeing student-athletes
and the athletic program achieve even greater success is
exciting, Boyd said.
