Tuskegee
announces 2005 football schedule
February 4, 2005
Tuskegee University, Alabama - A Saturday
afternoon, season-opening, home game kicks off the 2005 Tuskegee
football schedule. The Golden
Tigers’ 11-game slate includes four home games, five road
games and two neutral site games.
Tuskegee produced another outstanding record last season,
going 10-2, 7-1 SIAC with a trip to the Pioneer Bowl in Mobile,
Ala. Only a last second Hail Mary pass and a 2-point loss in
Pioneer Bowl VII kept the Golden Tigers from going 12-0 in
2004.
The Golden Tigers open this coming season, hosting in-state
opponent and future SIAC member Stillman on Aug. 27. Tuskegee
will enjoy an off-week on Sept. 3 before facing conference
foes Miles, Sept. 10, Birmingham, Ala., and Benedict, Columbia,
S.C., Sept. 17 on the road. A non-conference game, the Gateway
Classic, against Division 1AA Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the Edward
Jones Dome, St. Louis, Mo., is slated for Sept. 24.
Tuskegee notched victories over Miles and Benedict last year.
This will be Tuskegee’s first meeting with Stillman and
UAPB.
Tuskegee visits defending Southern Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference Champion Albany State Oct. 1. The Golden Tigers
and Maroon Tigers will meet Oct. 8 for the 70th time in the
Tuskegee-Morehouse Football Classic at Arthur J. McClung Memorial
Stadium, Columbus, Ga. TU will host Fort Valley State on Oct.
15, travel to Lane on Oct. 22 and entertain Clark Atlanta on
Oct. 29.
“We start out with five of our first six games on the
road, so we will have to be prepared to handle such a difficult
schedule,” said Head Coach Rick Comegy. “We will
have to play strong in September and early October to win the
conference title.”
The Golden Tigers dropped a last second decision to Albany
State last year, but won over Morehouse, Fort Valley State,
Lane and Clark Atlanta
Kentucky State’s visit on Nov. 5 for Tuskegee’s
81st Homecoming rounds out the conference schedule. The Golden
Tigers were 41-15 winners over Kentucky State in Frankfort
in 2004.
The regular-season comes to an end on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday,
Nov. 24, when Tuskegee make the I-85 trek from Tuskegee to
Montgomery to battle archrival and Division 1AA opponent Alabama
State in the 82nd Annual Turkey Day Football Classic at Cramton
Bowl. Tuskegee and Alabama State will meet for the 92nd time
overall and the Golden Tigers lead the all-time series with
the Hornets, 55-32-4, including a 27-17 win last year over
the SWAC champions.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff, also a SWAC member, and Stillman, a provisional
Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member, replace
Saint Augustine’s and West Alabama on the schedule. UAPB
fell one game short of playing in the SWAC title game and Stillman
finished the season at 5-5 in 2004.
“We feel that it is a good schedule for our fans, one
in which 72 percent of the games are within two hours of our
campus,” Comegy said.
