State sports information director retires

SAVANNAH—After
25 years on the job, Lee Grant Pearson, Savannah State University’s
sports information director, is retiring effective
March 1, 2005.

Pearson graduated from Savannah State in 1976 with a degree
in English language and literature and a minor in journalistic
communications. During his first four years at SSU, Pearson
was an Educational Talent Search counselor in the Division
of Student Special Programs. In 1977, he was a member of an
eight-state team designated to write the federal regulations
governing Student Special Programs, and he received an outstanding
service award for his work with the programs. Pearson then
transferred to the Savannah State office of public relations
where his primary duties included the operation of the campus
news bureau and dissemination of sports news. While he was
in the office of public relations, Pearson served one year
as the associate director of the Southern Regional Press Institute.
“I appreciate the opportunities that I have had to serve
the university and its best interests through the years. Savannah
State University is my alma mater and will always be very dear
to me,” Pearson said.
A native of Waycross, Ga., Pearson was awarded “Outstanding
Young Men in America” in 1987. He served as president
of the SIAC [Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference]
Sports Information Directors Association, and was a member
of the SIAC Hall of Fame selection committee, the SIAC Basketball
Tournament committee and an official scorer for SIAC winter
and spring championships. Pearson is a member of College Sports
Information Directors of America, Black College Sports Information
Directors of America, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and
a 32nd Degree Mason.
