Central
State Trustees vote to restore football
February 5, 2005
The Central State University Board
of Trustees has unanimously voted to restore football at the
Wilberforce, Ohio institution. The vote was taken Friday.
"I hear the University humming, people working together ...
now we need to hear the roar from the football stadium", said
President John Garland in addressing the Board following a
twenty-minute presentation by Vice-President of Institutional
Advancement Anthony Fairbanks.
Fairbanks' presentation included a report on funds already
collected, monies pledged, anticipated revenues from corporate
and private advertising and income from playing in football
classic games.
Several years ago, the Board approved a plan that would restore
football once $1.5 million in "outside funds" had been raised.
Fairbanks assured the Board that the goal would be met before
their April meeting.
Theo Lemon was hired
in July, 2003 as the 10th head coach of Marauder football
to assist with fundraising, recruiting potential players and
directing the program startup.
CSU will return to the gridiron with a limited schedule beginning
September 4 with a classic game in nearby Dayton.
