Silver Dollar Classic cancelled
Grambling to host Alcorn at Eddie Robinson Stadium
August 1, 2004
ALCORN STATE, Ms. – A week after the Alcorn
State-Grambling State contest was officially moved to Carson,
California, officials
of the classic have cancelled the event due to lack of
sponsorships.
Late
Friday evening, officials notified Grambling State of
the news, while Alcorn State officials became aware of
the cancellation Saturday evening. With the game being
a little more than a month away, representatives of the
Silver Dollar Classic felt they were incapable of securing
a sufficient number of major sponsors to aid in covering
hefty front-end expenses.
Nonetheless,
both schools had a contingency plan of Grambling to host
the game as originally scheduled if the classic fell
through. Thus, Grambling State will host Alcorn State
on September 4 at Eddie Robinson Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
“We’re
terribly sorry for the confusion that this has caused
the fans,” remarked athletic director Robert Raines. “Both
universities saw this as a great opportunity to gain
exposure for both the institution and its football programs.
Unfortunately with the Silver Dollar Classic being proposed
in such a late fashion we knew there was a good chance
the game would not be played in California if officials
were unsuccessful in gathering adequate sponsorship.”
ASU
and Grambling have entertained each other on 51 occasions
over the course of their respective histories. Grambling
leads the all-time series 35-15-1. Alcorn had the Tigers
on the ropes the past two seasons, but faltered in the
fourth quarter as GSU triumphed. Last season, the Braves
squandered a fourth quarter five point lead as Grambling
took advantage of two bad snaps on punt attempts with
17 unanswered points en route to a 40-28 win.
