Hampton Women Picked to Win MEAC

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Defending MEAC Champion Hampton University was selected to repeat, as voted by the MEAC head coaches and sports information directors. The Lady Pirates, who finished 17-1 in the MEAC last year and 23-9 overall, received 13 first-place votes.

Delaware State (385 points) was chosen second after a second-place 16-2 MEAC mark in 2002-03. Florida A&M, who tied Howard at 11-7 last season, was picked to finish third, followed by Bethune-Cookman (283 points), and Howard (261) to round out the top five.

Delaware State’s Mandy Clark was selected the preseason Player of the Year. Clark, an All-MEAC first team honoree in 2002-03, led the Lady Hornets in scoring with 15.4 points per game. The Baltimore native, who led the MEAC in 3-pt field goals made (65-2.35pg), was also selected to the 2003 All-Tournament team.

Joining Clark in the backcourt of the All-MEAC preseason first team is junior guard, Yolanda Dixon of Seattle, Washington. Dixon, an All-MEAC second team pick last year, was the second leading scorer for the Lady Rattlers last season averaging 14.1 points per game and 2.5 rebounds per game.

In the frontcourt, LaKesha Wills of Coppin State, Lynetta Sullivan of Hampton, and Kim Watson of FAMU were selected for first team honors. Wills, a 5-11 junior from Baltimore, Maryland led the Lady Eagles in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game. Sullivan, a 5-10 senior from New York, NY and All-MEAC first team pick in 2002-03, averaged 10.4 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game last season. Watson, last year’s MEAC Player-of-the-Year led the MEAC in rebounding (10.0 rpg.), while leading the Lady Rattlers in scoring (17.7 pgs.), rebounding, and blocks (1.14 pg).
