GREENSBORO, N.C. - Florida A&M is the favorite to win the 2003-04
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball regular season title, as voted
by the MEAC head coaches and media relations directors. The Rattlers, who finished
fourth in the MEAC last season with a 11-7 record, received eight first-place
votes and 385 total points.
Hampton was a close second behind the Rattlers 367 points after last season’s 13-5 MEAC record and second place finish. The Pirates received three first-place votes. Defending champion South Carolina State picked up four first-place votes (353 points)
to finish third. Delaware State, who finished third last season, was chosen fourth.
FAMU’s Terrence Woods was voted as the preseason Player of the Year. Woods, a 6-3 senior from Memphis, Tennessee , was an All-MEAC first team selection last season after leading the Rattlers in scoring (2nd in MEAC) with 20.5 points per game. Woods led the MEAC in three point field goals per game, averaging 4.96.
Joining Woods in the backcourt of the All-MEAC preseason first team is the 2002 MEAC Rookie of the year, junior guard Devin Green of Columbus Ohio. Green led
the Pirates last season with 14.9 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game.
In the frontcourt, Jimmy Boykin of Coppin State, Thurman Zimmerman of South Carolina State, and Pape Ba of Bethune-Cookman round out the first team honors. Boykin, a 6-7 senior from Jackson, Mississippi, averaged 11.5 points per game and
4.5 rebounds per game. Zimmerman, last year’s MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year, led S.C. State in scoring (16.0 ppg.) and rebounding (7.6 rpg.) last season. Ba, a 6-8 senior from Senegal, West Africa, averaged 10.7 points per game with 6.7 rebounds per game last season for the Wildcats.
