Orangeburg, SC—Voorhees College Tigers, Denmark, SC
and Morris College Lady Hornets, Sumter, SC won the Eastern
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (EIAC) men’s and
Women’s Cross Country Championships held at Orangeburg-Wilkerson
High School, Orangeburg, SC. It was the Tigers 7th consecutive
title and 7 out of 8 since Frank Hyland took control as Head
Coach in 1996. The Tigers were led by Fredrick Smith, a freshman
from Sumter, SC who finished with the winning time of 27:50.
Smith, a standout from Sumter High School and one of the top
ten Cross Country Runners in South Carolina for the past two
years, pulled away from the pack finished 2:29 ahead of the
next runner. Smith was named the EIAC Men’s Outstanding
Runner-of-the-Year.
Morris Lady Hornets repeated as the Women’s Champions.
The Lady Hornets were lead by their Fab Five Sophomores, Malinda
Amilca from Brooklyn, NY; Ralaska Hoover from Jacksonville,
FL, Samantha Keeby from Claxton, GA; Andrea Perkins from Kingston,
GA; and Gracie Ward from Blackville, SC. All five young ladies
were top ten runners and were named to the All-Conference Team.
Amilca, who finished second, was edged out of first-place for
the second consecutive year by Sophomore Allicia Golden from
Sumter, SC. The two young ladies lead the race from begin to
end running side-by-side until the last 200 meters when Golden
out sprint Amilca to the finish line. Golden was named the
Women’s Outstanding Runner-of-the-Year for the second
consecutive year.
Frank Hyland of Voorhees College and Rodney Johnson from Morris
College were named the Men’s and Women’s Coach-of-the-Year,
respectively.
