Bethune-Cookman head volleyball coach resigns

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Paula Thompson has resigned as Bethune-Cookman College head volleyball coach to pursue other career opportunities.

Thompson served as head coach at B-CC for the past five seasons. During her tenure, she has built a 59-103 overall and a 31-27 conference record. In 2000 she was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, taking B-CC from a dismal 3-24 overall, 2-8 MEAC record in 1999 to an astonishing 12-24 overall, 8-6 MEAC turnaround season. In 2001, Paula Thompson guided her team to the best record in B-CC history since joining Division I, 19-14 overall and 10-4 MEAC. But the Lady Wildcats struggled during the 2003 season recording a 12-22 overall and 5-5 MEAC record.

B-CC athletic director, Lynn Thompson hopes Thompson is successful in all of her future endeavors.

“ I am sad to see her leave us,” Mr. Thompson said. “But I understand that she has tremendous opportunities ahead of her. We wish her well and she will always be apart of the Wildcat family.”

Paula Thompson had over 16 years of high school coaching experience before entering B-CC. She began her coaching career in 1983 at Mount Vernon High School as an assistant volleyball coach. She then became head volleyball coach at Licking Heights High School/Middle School from 1984-86. Thompson also held an assistant volleyball coaching position at Deland High School from 1992-93. Then served as the assistant softball coach at Stetson University during the 1994 season.

Before coming to B-CC, Thompson was the head volleyball coach at Taylor Middle School from 1994-99. She was also the department head of Physical Education at Taylor Middle School.
B-CC athletics department have already began an extensive nationwide search to fill the newly vacant position.
